What is the gator population of America? And in what state are they most abundant?

Well last time I tried to take a gator census the total was about one million, but that was only in Florida and I still don't understand why they are considered an endangered species. Did you know that there are only two countries on earth that have alligators? Only the United States and China have them. The majority of American Alligators inhabit Florida and Louisiana.
